About the project

Project Overview

Fighting for the Future is a digital media project exploring boxing culture across Leeds. It focuses on how local boxing gyms function as spaces of discipline, community and personal development, particularly for young people. The project brings together video, photography and web design to present an accessible and engaging platform rooted in real environments.

Purpose & Rationale

The project responds to ongoing discussions around youth engagement, community sport and digital inclusion. Boxing gyms in Leeds often provide structure, mentorship and a sense of belonging for young people, yet these environments are frequently misunderstood or underrepresented. This project aims to present a more grounded and realistic view of boxing culture, highlighting its social value beyond competition.

What the Project Includes

The platform features a series of three short documentary-style interviews created in collaboration with the boxing coaches at Alliance Boxing Academy in Seacroft, Leeds. Alongside this, the website provides an overview of boxing culture in Leeds, a directory of gyms, and guidance for beginners who may be interested in getting involved. The content is designed to be clear, accessible and relevant to young audiences.

Production Approach

The project adopts a documentary-style approach, with its interviews with coaches exploring how boxing can help young people and the current struggles of boxing gyms. Emphasis is placed on authenticity, with minimal staging and a focus on real experiences. The website has been designed as a mobile-first platform to ensure accessibility, particularly for users with limited digital resources.
